Wondering how to turn your family time into a laughter-filled adventure this holiday season? Skip the usual routine and dive into some delightful activities that will bring everyone closer together. Here are some simple activities we suggest.
Doubles
To play this game, you will need two dice, a ball, a few giftable items, and a lot of saran wrap. The ball in our example is the size of a dodgeball, but you could even use a baseball if that’s what you have. The gifts are small items such as a five-dollar bill or a fun size candy bar or a token of some kind. Wrap the ball with saran wrap, periodically wrapping in your gifts. Once you have it ready, one person starts unwrapping it while everyone else takes turns rolling the dice. Any prize that is unwrapped now belongs to the “unwrapper”. When someone rolls doubles, that person now has the chance to unwrap the ball until the next person rolls doubles. The stakes are up to you and how desirable you make your prizes!
Landing the Cane
This is a game for two requiring eight glass bottles, eight candy canes, and two strings. The rest of your crew can cheer on the two competitors and rotate in once there is a declared winner. Line up the bottles in two rows on a table. Each of the two competitors will tie a string to something secure behind their row of bottles. The competitors will then hold the free end of the string and place one candy cane at a time on their string, raising or lowering it delicately with the objective of lowering the cane into one of their glass bottles. The first competitor to lower all of their candy canes into their bottles wins.
Gratitude Game
Each participant gets three pieces of paper, writing one thing they are thankful for on each one. The papers are then shuffled and drawn one by one. The reader gets to guess who wrote on each piece of paper and the writer is revealed as the conversation evolves. Be prepared to learn a little about people you already love a lot.
Unwrapping Kisses
The only things you need for this game are oven mitts and Hershey’s kisses. Put on the oven mitts and see who can unwrap the most kisses in one minute. You can play head-to-head or in a larger group, and instead of oven mitts, you can play with ski gloves or use toothpicks to unwrap your kisses.
Snow Shovel
Grab a spatula, a bowl, a blindfold, and about 20 cotton balls per player. Spread the cotton balls out on a kitchen or living room table and give the spatula and bowl to the first blindfolded player. Each player will have one minute to get as many cotton balls into the bowl as possible, using only the spatula. It sounds easier than it is until it’s your turn to wear the blindfold! See a video example here.
